Medical Massage through VACCN

Medical massage through the VA Community Care Network (CCN) is a specialized therapy designed to help veterans manage pain, recover from injuries, and improve overall well-being. It is part of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Whole Health System, which integrates complementary and integrative health approaches.

What is Medical Massage in the VA Community Care Network?

Medical massage involves targeted techniques such as deep tissue therapy, trigger point release, and myofascial work to address specific health conditions. It is recommended primarily for pain management and rehabilitation. Veterans can receive medical massage when deemed clinically necessary by their VA care team.

How to Qualify for Medical Massage Through VA CCN

To qualify for medical massage through the VA Community Care Network, veterans must:

  • Be enrolled in VA healthcare.

  • Have a medical condition that warrants massage therapy (e.g., chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, fibromyalgia).

  • Receive a referral from their VA provider, who determines if massage therapy is clinically necessary.

  • Be approved for community care if VA facilities cannot provide the service or if travel to a VA facility is difficult.

Contraindications for Medical Massage

While medical massage is generally safe, there are certain conditions where it may not be recommended:

  • Acute infections or fever.

  • Severe osteoporosis (risk of fractures).

  • Blood clotting disorders (risk of embolism).

  • Recent surgeries or open wounds.
